What are same-day sick visits?

A same-day sick visit provides immediate care for acute illnesses and injuries. 

If you or your child gets sick or suffers an injury and it doesn’t improve with at-home treatments, like rest or over-the-counter medication, contact the team at Leonida Family Practice. What happens during a same-day sick visit?

Your Leonida Family Practice provider reviews your medical history and asks about your symptoms, including when they started, what they feel like, and if you’ve tried at-home treatments like rest or taking over-the-counter medication.

Next, your provider completes an exam. If you have a sore throat, they examine your mouth and throat with a bright light and collect a swab to test for a viral or bacterial infection. If you have a dry cough and a high fever, they order a viral test to check for the flu and COVID-19.

After confirming your diagnosis, the team makes treatment recommendations.

How are acute illnesses and injuries treated?

Treatment of acute illnesses and injuries depends on your general health, the severity of your symptoms, and their effect on your quality of life. Often, sicknesses like the common cold and the seasonal flu go away on their own with rest, drinking plenty of fluids, and taking over-the-counter medication.

If you have a bacterial or viral infection, the team may prescribe antibiotics or antiviral medication. Make sure to finish the entire course of medication, even if your symptoms improve before the pills are gone. If you don’t, the infection might rebound.
